Born in the city of Elche, he specialised in ophthalmology at Hospital Clínico and Gregorio Marañon Hospital, both in Madrid. During that time he did internships at Clínica Barraquer in Barcelona and Niño Jesús Hospital in Madrid, completing his specialisation with an ophthalmology residency at La Fé Hospital in Valencia. After training as a specialist, he went to work at the Provincial Hospital in Alicante. He achieved first place in the admission examination for that hospital, where he worked for six years. Once it became Hospital de San Juan de Alicante, he was only there for a short time before he was made Head of the Ophthalmology Department of the General University Hospital of Elche.
